SUMMER READING CAMP 2016 AT PBES REAPS SUCCESS!
Since it is an avocation of the Department of Education to every pupil’s upliftment on their learning ability level specifically in reading in a double way process, the Summer Reading Camp Program, now on its 4th year, is fully adopted and implemented at Padre Burgos Elementary School in a very meaningful and exciting manner across all learning areas with a theme: “I can Read And Play (IReAP)”. This started on April 1 to 15 to cater the selected able and struggling readers based on this year’s result of the Phil-Iri Reading Comprehension Test which was given to Grades II to VI pupils. The said school-based activity is anchored on the following objectives:
a. to help non-readers read
b. to enable frustration readers comprehend what they read
c. to develop instructional readers’ comprehension skills and improve oral interpretation skills
d. to enhance the reading abilities of individuals through various literacy activities
e. to hone teacher-volunteers’ teaching capacities / competencies in teaching reading
Other subject areas are often an overlooked part of summer reading camp since the main focus of the learning is Reading (English subject), but that concern was easily been resolved. All the subjects were incorporated in all reading activities. Fortunately, there were many fun and engaging games that can get almost any learner hooked, even the most reluctant one.
To establish the advocacy of learning while enjoying this summer vacation, on April 1 at exactly 8:00 a.m., Padre Burgos Elementary School had a kick-off for the 4th Summer Reading Camp Across All Learning Areas in an Inclusive Setting with a theme “I Can Read and Play (IReAP)” through a parade which was accompanied by the PBES Marching Band to encourage the youngsters attend the ten-day summer reading camp from April 4-15.
Out of 161 campers there were 81 (50%) campers who have a complete attendance; 43 (27%) campers who have 1 absence; 22 (14%) who have 9 out of 11 days of attendance; 10 campers (6%) who have 3 absences; and 5 (3%) pupils who have 7 out of 11 days of attendance respectively. This means that based on the attendance result, it shows that half of the participants completed the attendance and it barely indicates that the summer camp is effective and had satisfied their interests.
There were 32 volunteer teachers who responded to serve as camp trainers in the 4th Summer Reading Camp Across All Learning Areas. Seven from Grade I, five from Grade II, five from Grade III, four from Grade IV, six from Grade V, and five from Grade VI.
The instructional materials that were used by the camp trainers were composed of technology-based materials, non-technology materials, and teacher-made materials.
With all the positive results and observations of conducting the Summer Reading Camp Across All Learning Areas in school, it’s good to infuse into our minds that keeping the child academically engaged over the summer doesn’t have to be a chore for teachers, parents, and even to the child. Helping the children stay engaged throughout the summer will help set them up for success in the new school year.

PBES Welcomes Balik Eskwela 2016 with a Blast!
Spearheaded by the school principal together with the teachers, P. Burgos Elementary School kicked-off the Balik Eskwela 2016 with a new four-storey building to be used by the incoming pupils starting this school year. This is a good start for almost 2000 enrollees as they feel the comfort of studying with this brand new facility.
Along with the principal and other teachers, some Program Schools Supervisors visited the school to join the opening of the school year on Monday. There were glitches encountered but these were solvable and easy to address according to the principal; like in the afternoon session wherein most of the parents were queued outside in hopes of accompanying their children to their classrooms. The principal acknowledged the problem by allowing only those parents with transferred-in children can get inside the school vicinity.
The annual Balik Eskwela aims to address various concerns and challenges that arise, such as school records, room assignments, classrooms, teachers, electricity and water supply, traffic, security and peace and order, weather condition and prices of school supplies, among others. These areas of concerns were already discussed during the Parents’ Assembly conducted on June 6 to fully update them before the school year starts.
The opening of classes turned out to be “generally smooth” as described by the administrators.
